iPhoneOS 3.1.1 Released; $4.95 for iPod touch
Now half price for iPod touch owners who waited.
In all of yesterday's Apple-filled excitement, perhaps impactful was the release of iPhone OS 3.1.1. Granted, it's not a major release like 3.0 was, but it does affect the millions of iPhone and iPod touch owners worldwide.
New in the .1.1 bump from 3.0 is more pervasive Genius integration, which now can recommend Apps and create up to a dozen music playlists from whatever is on the device.
Apple is now going to be selling ringtones from iTunes, and it's more than happy to do that for you wirelessly too. We can already see the dollar signs flying.
A huge new feature, especially for those who have many apps installed, is the ability to organize apps as how you want them to appear on your home screen using drag and drop (finally!).
iPod touch owners who have held out and haven't paid their $10 to upgrade to OS 3.0 will be most happy to learn that the jump to 3.1.1 now only costs half as much at just under $5.
Other new features of 3.1.1 include:
- Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos
- iTunes U content organization
- Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
- Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
- Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
- Option to "Save as new clip" when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
- Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
- Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe
- Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
- Paste phone numbers into the keypad
- Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
- Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
- Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
- Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly
